Elizabeth Dawson-smith of Murray River (Dhungala) A showgirl on the river

"There is something almost ominous about the Australian landscape. It's unforgiving, ancient and sonically abundant. The idea of moving with the mighty Murray River, re-connecting with nature and the deeper rhythms of land, is appealing because it breaks the pattern of everyday life, it's a shake up, a disconnect and an opportunity to find yourself in the spaces where the noise used to be.

Even a ritzy showgirl can have a spiritual connection to land, and I look forward to being unexpected.

About Elizabeth-Dawson Smith

I am a director, choreographer, performer and musician working across cabaret, circus, vaudeville, comedy with a deep love for suburban satire, unusual ideas and evocative experiences. I started performing at a very young age, and see the ever evolving trajectory of my creative career as a testament to my passion for learning and new understanding. I love to philosophise about the creative process, and in some ways I see creativity as a vehicle to re-imagine problems you are yet to solve - with this in mind, my busy career suggests I've had a LOT of problems that needed solving! So now, I'm in my 40s, raising a teenager, mentoring artists with their own work and navigating the challenges of a digitally thriving but socially isolated modern world, as an entertainer, that's an interesting precipice to find yourself in. As an artist, I respond, and I am looking forward to embarking on this journey, allowing the experience to impact my next creative work.

Why did I apply?

I am always seeking out new experiences. Sometimes I wonder if this is a blessing or a curse, but with so many stories, and very few regrets, I’m of the mind that a colourful life is a life well lived. This is an invitation to disconnect from my current urban surroundings, and reconnect with the natural world - I’m all in.

What I will weave...

I’m looking forward to exploring the landscape with everyone, l’m particularly interested in sounds & the birds. The wide expanse and slow pace will invite in all kinds of inspiration for all of us… and I look forward to exploring the waterways by canoe.
This is a circuit breaker.
