Murray River (Dhungala) artist in residence paddle with Andrea Shaw

14 - 18 Nov 2025

A 5-day regenerative journey with Dhungala / Murray River and artist in residence, Andrea Shaw.

About Andrea

Andrea Shaw is a paint and textile artist based on Wadawarrung Country, Victoria’s Surf Coast. Growing up on a bush property in Central Victoria, her childhood was shaped by trees, dams, and endless hours of making, an intuitive creativity that still drives her practice today.

Andrea’s work draws on observation, memory, and time spent in the landscape. Working from quick sketches made on walks, her paintings are playful, abstract responses to shifting forms in nature, blending colour, pattern, and process in intuitive ways. Alongside her studio practice, Andrea facilitates creative workshops in community, disability, and mental health settings, adapting her approach to make art accessible, engaging, and meaningful for all participants.

Andrea brings to this experience an invitation for participants to slow down, observe, and connect deeply to the river, allowing creativity to arise from a place of presence. The trip she is crafting holds space for individual and collective storytelling, interwoven with conversation and creative response. It is a way of being where art is inseparable from life, and where the act of paddling and observing becomes a form of expression and restoration.

About the Journey

This journey is a deliberate reconnection with nature and our place within its living systems. As paddles cut through the water tracing the river’s ancient path, participants shed the illusion of separation and recognise themselves as part of the interconnectedness of all living things. Through deep listening and careful observation, they attune to the subtle languages of water, wind, and wildlife, allowing the shifting patterns of light, sound, and movement to inspire creative response, in a myriad of ways. The act of paddling becomes an embodied practice of presence, fostering individual reflection deepening connection to place and each other.

Nights under open skies offer space for quiet communion with the environment, where the boundary between self and landscape blurs amid the sounds of rustling leaves, bird calls, and flowing water. Each moment invites stepping beyond human-centric views to acknowledge the intricate web of life that surrounds and sustains us. More than a journey across kilometers, this experience invites participants to deepen their connection with the natural world, themselves, and each other through observation, listening, and creative response.
