Murray River (Dhungala) artist in residence paddle with Emily-Rose Sharkova

A 5-day regenerative journey with Dhungala / Murray River and artist in residence, Emily-Rose Sharkova.

Emily-Rose Sharkova is a shape-shifting music artist, composer and producer whose work spans folk, art pop, jazz, electronic and experimental realms. Known for her crystalline vocals and emotive instrumentalism, she leads Emily-Rose and The Wild and collaborates across projects including Slow Streams, Shark & Fox, Little Clouds, Szinata and The Good Behaviours. Her music is grounded in deep listening as well as explosive joy, passion for environmental activism, the natural world and emotional resonance — leading her to create soundscapes that are intimate, expansive, unexpected and uncontained.

Why Artist in Residence with Up the Creek?

Being an Artist In Residence on this river expedition aligns so beautifully with an energy and purpose I keep being pulled toward.

The natural world has always been my greatest teacher. Exploring it has pushed my resilience, opened paths of thought and encouraged me to sink into my human-ness. The further we push ourselves into a tech-driven, synthetic environment, the busier, more discontent and cluttered we become. It weighs us down like a stone and confuses us with a myriad of untruths. The natural environment is complex, but it deeply connects us to ourselves - its complexities and beauties are a mirror of our own natural makeup.

When I find my own life and issues becoming unbearably important, I face myself towards the vastness of an ocean, to the strength of a mountain or the endless flow of the river, and it relieves me of this unnatural concern of self-importance. Moving through nature, with no other intention but to be there with yourself and your surroundings, gives us a wonderful opportunity to transform our thoughts away from the strange structures we have over-engineered in our lives, and gear them towards observing ourselves in a more natural state. This can be both an uncomfortable and serene experience. We experience the discomfort of cold water to feel the comfort of the sun's warmth, let go of consistent structures to uncover unexpected joy and allow the river to show us an alternate way to travel in our own ever changing, mysterious and unpredictable lives.

Join us to slow down and reconnect.
