Connecting with Birrarung as a living entity - Paddle and Picnic - City to Herring Island

In 2017, in response to Wurundjeri and community activism, Birrarung and its lands were recognised as a single living entity - all the way from Mt Baw Baw to Port Phillip Bay, granting it the same rights as us.

How might we connect with Birrarung from this space? What has contributed to our collective and personal relationships with Birrarung so far, and how has this shaped its wellbeing? How might we reimagine this relationship? Especially in the built environment of Narrm? How might we listen to the river, care for the river, as we would to one of our own?

These are some of the questions we may contemplate as we paddle from where Birrarung/ Yarra meets the City of Melbourne (Naarm/ Narrm) on Wurundjeri and Bunurong/ Boon Wurrung Country, up to Herring Island.

Here we will enjoy a complimentary picnic of sandwiches before paddling back, connecting with ourselves, each other, and Birrarung as we go.

Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo (woi wurrung) - what's good for the Yarra is good for all.
