Birrarung / Yarra River

Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country

Birrarung - known as the river of mists and shadows in Woi Wurrung language. Winding its way through 242kms of rainforest, farmlands, towns and the city, all the way from Mt Baw Baw to Port Phillip Bay.

In 2017 this river was recognised as a single, living entity, granting it the same rights as humans. Unfortunately, since colonisation it has not been seen in this way, having been turned into a drain and treated accordingly. Thanks to Wurundjeri people who pushed for the river’s recognition and resulting activism and community support, things are looking brighter for Birrarung again.

Come and experience the magic of this river and explore your own relationship with it. What might it reveal to you?

'Burndap Birrarung Burndap Umarkoo' - what's good for the Yarra is good for all.
